Winner of the ebook copy of Onyx – Book 1, of my MadMan MacKeefe Series is . . . . Krysta B! Thanks everyone for entering.
Hi everyone, and an early Happy Halloween to you!
Some of our holiday traditions stem from medieval times.
For instance, in Ian – Book 3 of my Scottish MadMan MacKeefe Series, I show how they celebrated All Hallow’s Eve. Back then, on All Hallow’s Eve, children and beggars would go door to door begging for soul cakes. Soul cakes were small, round, palm-sized cakes made with spices and currants, and had a cross on the top. Supposedly for every soul cake eaten, a soul would be released from purgatory. (What we know as Trick or Treat.)
While the people begged for soul cakes, they carried hallowed-out gourds with carved faces or designs in them, and with lit candles inside. This would light their way and also scare away the evil spirits. (What we know as Jack-o-lanterns – they didn’t have pumpkins.) One last tradition was that the men would dress like women and the women like men, just for fun on that day. (What we know as Halloween costumes.)
You can read more about the customs of All Hallow’s Eve, or as the ancient pagans once called Samhain, by reading Ian – Book 3 of my MadMan MacKeefe Series.
