Happy Summer everyone! I hope you are enjoying it so far. I’d like you to be the first to see the cover of my new book, The Baron’s Quest – Book 1 in my new medieval Barons of the Cinque Ports trilogy.
Back in medieval times before the king had a royal navy, he would borrow ships to help him fight his wars. Merchants and fishermen were among those who supplied the ships. They were granted special privileges, for example, no tax on imports or exports for the use of their ships and crews for 15 days out of the year, to aid the king. The king put barons in charge of the ports, and the five main shipping ports of the time were Hastings, New Romney, Hythe, Sandwich and Dover.
In The Baron’s Quest, Lord Nicholas Vaughn is Baron of the New Romney Port. He not only discovers deceit on the docks, but a merchant’s daughter named Muriel Draper who is breaking his rules while trying to make a living. She is a spinster – which back then meant she spun wool for a living. I learned quite a lot about the guilds and trades of the times while doing research for this book, and I think you will find it as fascinating as I have. This book will be followed by The Baron’s Bounty – Book 2 and The Baron’s Destiny – Book 3. The first book will be released in mid-July, and the others will follow each month or so after that.
